For over 22 years Alan has been helping people resolve their emotional, spiritual and interpersonal difficulties related to various life and mental health issues, such as anger, anxiety, depression, communication skills, conflict resolution, marriage, dating, job loss, and addictions like pornography, alcohol, and drugs. His experiences in training and counseling adults to become therapeutic foster parents, and his work with couples and families, has given him the knowledge and tools to equip parents with practical interventions to manage their child or teen’s problematic behaviors.
His style of counseling is warm, relational, and varies between directive and non-directive, depending on the needs of the individual or couple.
Treatment is personalized to the client's needs whether they have come for individual counseling, couples counseling, or family counseling. As a Christian counselor, recommended interventions may include prayer, scripture, coaching, handouts, assessments, recommended books and deep exploration of the client’s beliefs and values.
He graduated with honors with a Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) in 2002, which involved 45 credits in theology and 60 credits in psychology. While attending DTS, he was also trained in Neuthetic Counseling at the Christian Counseling Center of Dallas, was trained at St. Paul Medical Center’s Intensive Outpatient Substance Abuse Program, and was trained at The Minirth Clinic with Dr. Minirth.
Additionally, he has four years of psychoanalytic training, which helps him better understand how trauma, attachment needs, and life experiences shape our core identity and subjective world. Many issues people face today go beyond surface techniques and interventions, and understanding the inner-subjective experience of the individual is critical. He was the President of the Tampa Bay Psychoanalytic Society from May 2020 - May 2022.
